Back 5 months and only just beginning to readjust... a new series of painting is emerging and will be exhibited at Red Poles Gallery McLaren Vale opening 11 Sept 2011. Titled 'Sojourn' the exhibition will include friends Giles Bettison (Glass) Belinda Newick (Jewlery) Nick Attfield (Blacksmith/Sculpture) and reflect on each individuals recent sojourn in the French and European zeitgeist.

Had a great Xmas week with brother Stephen and family.... lots of good food wine and country jaunts. Images from very cold day at Pont De Gard and St Remy De Provence where Vincent was interned for a year and churned out 150 paintings! Leaving early Tuesday for five days in Florence and then meeting friends for a week in Venice then some snow time in Chamonix!

Fantastic long weekend in Paris with friends. Highlight was a very extensive retrospective of Basquiat paintings from the 80's and some quality dining experiences. Cold now and snow throughout country.... awaiting a flurry down south and hopeful for Xmas. Brother Stephen and family here for a week of festive indulgence and village life on Xmas eve .... Rose in Corsica again this weekend to do final blend for the Vermentino wine and is also looking at doing a Rosé in Provence. Planning departure for Italy January 4.

Had a great time with Giles and Suzanne who left for Spain on Sunday. Had a last hoorar at the village bar with friends and crazy locals. Then onto huge thanksgiving lunch that lasted 10 hours and ended up in drinking games with inevitable consequences. Rose and I going with Danielle and Nikolai to Paris for a long weekend this Friday, kid free! There is a Cy Twombly exhibition at the new Gagosian Paris Gallery, a major Basquiat retrospective at the Musee de art Modern and the Pompidou has a Gabriel Orozco exhibition - should be fun!

Many adventures this week but none to surpass the Roman built Pont du Gard. One of the greatest roman engineering achievements. We are being treated this weekend to a huge thanksgiving dinner with a couple of American writers living in the village who have become good friends. We are fully settled in and now all reluctant to leave except Evie! Still coming home but who knows what the future holds...

Exploring Marseilles with Giles and Suzanne and the Uzes market for supplies. Getting cold but sunny days on the whole. Village life is great - hanging out with some cool people, consuming too much van rouge and generally getting into the swing of things. So many artists and loving the easy access to Europe. Pulled Evie out for some home schooling as she is getting hassled by girls in local school - much happier. All others are progressing well with language and loving new friendships.

Corsican Feast....

Returned last night from Corsica where Rose is putting together a white Vermentino for Ulithorne - its a beautiful refreshing white wine variety and is widely grown on both Corsica and Sardinia... will be a good addition to the brand. She also has a mission to find a quality Rosé from Provence and maybe a Tempranillo from Rioja Spain. The plan being to source single variety organic grapes from the best sites in the world for that variety, make a great wine with the grower and put them under our label - also a good excuse to travel. The 5 hour boat ride over to Corsica was a bit rough for the kids but we loved the Island's rugged interior and villages on the West coast. It would be great to sail around - next time. Rose has to go over again in December to do the final blend but that wine should be back in Australia in March next year.

I was in Munich for 2 days and have taken in so much quality art....my feet and mind are in overload.... images of Cy Twombly work from Brandhorst Museum which was amazing and then onto a portrait exhibition of Marlene Dumas..... it couldn't get any better. Landed in Copenhagen this am and seeking contemporary art and design.....

I have been scouring the Galleries of both Dusseldorf and Cologne which is considered the home to contemporary art in Germany past and present - a huge retrospective of the work of the inexplicable Joseph Buyers and visits to the private collections of several billionaire industrialists. Vast quantities of art by those I most admire including Gerhard Richter, Anselm Kiefer, Georg Baselitz, Pier Kirby, Cy Twombly, etc etc...... Thats just the beginning of an avalanche of quality work that predominates the consciousness of everyday European life....

Images of how it was just after we arrived in Lacanau.... Since then its been onshore slop - consequently we have been touring around tasting the wines etc.... Leaving Thursday for San Sebastian in Spain where am meeting Rose and Kids for the week. Maybe get some waves down there. Will be definitely be checking out an extensive ROBERT RAUSCHENBERG exhibition in Bilbao Guggenheim this weekend then maybe head down to Barcelona..... Depends on French strikes - everything is slowly grinding to a halt as the country runs out of fuel..... getting colder and the snow has been falling in the Alps... I am heading to Dusseldorf, Munich and Copenhagen for a week beginning November for some major exhibitions of Cy Twombly, Gerhard Richter and Anselm Kiefer - so very excited about that. Rose is negotiating to buy some Corsican white wine to label under Ulithorne so we look to be all going down there and staying in their Gite on the vineyard - its renown for its spectacular scenery..... Giles Suzanne and kids arriving for 10 days mid November so that will be fun.... Lots still to do but will update later

Arrived in Lacanau to solid 8 foot dredging monster French beach breaks...... Suffice to say we just watched and witnessed people being smashed into the sand..... This place works best on 3-5 feet and thats enticipated for all next week....We did however get a couple of sessions in yesterday and it was fantastic to get in the water again even though a bit rusty....anyway we visited the beautiful city of Bordeaux and its contemporary art gallery - few images above.

Heading off on Wednesday for surf trip to the Atlantic with Toby based at Lacanau near Bordeaux. Then meeting up with Rose and kids for a week in Spain - probably take in San Sebastian, Bilbao and Barcelona. Have included couple of new works by me and images from a fantastic Giacometti exhibition in Nice we went to last week. Have slowly began to meet other expats in the area - many artists and writers to consume wine with and discuss the meaning of it all - have discovered that Mr R Crumb lives just down the road so hope to meet him at some stage....

Well we have been out and about a bit lately - last week we met up with Toby & Emma for lunch in Aix en Provence. Met up with them again for the weekend in Toulon for Emma's party. On the way down we had a look around Arles- for a major photographic exhibition program. This week we are taking all the kids to a professional bull fight at Nime Colosseum and again on the weekend with some friends from London. Will be interesting and potentially very challenging but it is being banned from next year in Spain and France so it marks the end of an era. Kids settled in school and allowing us time to focus on making stuff .....

The kids have begun school without too much angst and they all managed to find new friends on the first day - they have accepted their fate and are negotiating language and place well. My art materials finally arrived today and I have set up a studio space out the back. I will embark tomorrow on a new era of work..... Travel news; I am meeting Toby for 2 weeks surfing based at Lacanau near Bordeaux from 6 October. Rose and kids meeting me there then we are off for another week or so to San Sebastian, Bilbao and Barcelona. Rose has begun writing her best seller to rival Dan Brown and is loving her freedom and time.... Few images seeking out antique items and studio space. This weekend heading down to Toulon for Emma's birthday party which falls on the same day as mine!

Well our guests have left and we are now getting the children ready for school - starts tomorrow which is a relief. Few photos include a village running of the bulls event last weekend - as we are close to Spain this tradition is strong. In fact we plan to all go to a professional bull fight at the Nime's Roman Collosseum mid September. Also some images from Avignion where we went yesterday and saw a great exhibition by the Spanish artist Miquel Barcelo'.

We are all very happy with our digs for the next 5 months.... its ticked all the boxes .... plenty of room and a studio. The kids are all booked into school and start next Thursday - there is anxiety mixed with excitement, the French is not great but that will change fast.... Rose is looking at some grapes in Corsica so may have to travel there next week. Toby and I are planning a surf trip for 2 weeks around Bordeaux early October. I have a stack of art materials coming from Paris next week to get stuck into and hope to get some paintings done for an exhibition when we return... JJ Julie and their kids have been here for the week its been great exploring the local haunts ..... I have been getting into a cycling routine every day a 16km round trip to the village of Sommiers.

Well just landed in Aubais and moved into long term abode and Rose is already declaring this is our new permanent address....only 4 hours in... I am not far removed from this sentiment - the village is classic narrow paint scraping streets and stone some colour no sign of visible life apart from the odd out burst of undisernable french from high, and an amazing house that I will photo and post in next few days. JJ Julie and their kids here for the week so plan to explore some local bull fighting markets oysters and generally settle in and prepare the kids for school.....

Saxon Orlo and I lucked on a wicked medieval Keep (castle) yesterday from the 11th Century - classic stuff on a hill surrounded by a small town - it was full of dungeons, torture chambers, a moat, tunnels etc etc see images attached.... we have arrived in Le Mont-Dore an alpine village in the central Aubergne region - full of mad cheeses and meats and chilled red wines. Found a good walking trail up in the mountains around a lake this arvo and found a patch of wild raspberries and blueberries and pigged out as you would expect....

Great medieval villages, narrow cobbled streets and grandness.... We drove to Villers-Bretonneux North of Paris in the Somme today to see the Australian Memorial to the over 60,000 Australian men who died on the Western Front in WW1. My great Gandfather, Frank Walton, was one of the 10,000 men who fought there and died on 5 April 1918 and was never recovered but is remembered with his name on the memorial...... Its a beautiful site on top of a hill they fought to occupy - the visit amplifies the utter uselessness of war as its avoidable consequences....

Went to an enormous flea market today on the Northern fringe of Paris. It was packed with the coolest stuff - amazingly and gratefully we came away empty handed but did only manage to see about 10% of it in half a day. First day in Paris and off to the Pompidou (museum for art from 1910 - today) and what a blast. Kids loved it, still didn't see it all so back again tomorrow. Big Lucian Freud retrospective that was impressive and some other stuff above. Paris busy and hot - but many cool little alleys and shops/galleries......

Just arrived in Paris and yet to explore. We have lobbed on friends of Toby and Emma's whilst they go to OZ and travel around including utilizing the Mill..... Little did they know what was about to hit them - still they also have 4 children. Germany was interesting on many fronts - poor, dirty, vibrant, young, rude, isolated, welcoming, immediate...... So prevalent in Berlin was WW2 - monuments images etc yet know one wants to discuss what went on, but aleviatete the memory through the creation of tourist attractions ...... I don't know but it is very raw for many..... anyway happy days in gay pari.....

Took the train to Dresden yesterday to see some major contemporary art collections and the bombed remains of the city. 80% destroyed in early 1945 and they are still reconstructing many of the old buildings. Came across attitude that makes me long for France but thats another story. Had a great game of soccer in middle of city with boys v girls ended at 4/3 ..... to be continued

Berlin is a happening place no doubt - cheap to live in the Eastern half post reunification so thousands of thousands of artists vying for attention. Anyway heaps of my favourites including Cy Twombly, Anselm Kiefer, Baselitz, Richter etc. We have 2 weeks here so plenty of time to get to know the city and its galleries. Currently staying with cousins of Rose in Hamburg (northern Germany) for the week. Weather has been sunny and warm and girls doing some horse riding with similarly aged girls and going to their school for some good german discipline. I am going to Art Basel (biggest art fair in the world) in Switzerland tomorrow and meeting up with the others in Berlin Monday. Keeping an eye on surf at home and looks good but much art to be had so not too much pain.......

Saw Henry Moore exhibition today at Tate Britian - great draftsman and pioneer of all things stone and wood. Have included image of his work. Also caught some Damian Hirst work including a sheep in thamaldahide. London cold and wet - just like an Oz winter. Kids being dragged to London Tower today for some suitable punishment then home for the world cup - the country is in a football frenzy and will certainly shut down come Saturday. cheers

Met family overnight in singapore and more hot food and beer. Staying with JJ and Julie and their 4 kids (mental house) in London and now about to head to Tate Modern, Sattchi Gallery etc Will update more regularly now have computer. Cheers

News on French Adventure

Currently in the process of packing up the family and house for an 8 month sojourn in SW France beginning in June. We will be creating a film documentary, exploring the contemporary arts throughout Europe, meeting with some gallery directors to generate representation for my art practice, and indulging in the French lifestyle and cuisine. Have found a house in a medieval village near Montpellier... so a few hours from quality surf. However intend to travel down Portuguese coast to Morocco.... so much surf to be had there no doubt.

Will update blog several times per week with images and film of stuff encounted....

This is where I mill about trying to summon the chi..... Its a home, studio and cellar door for my partners wine. We also display my paintings and sell a bit of mid-century furniture and antiques down on the lower level. Oh, and we hold the odd group show with an eclectic mix of artists.

Have done some new work this week that addresses issues of death - represented through skulls and crows. Will try and post them in next few days.
